Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is an effective and safe treatment to help save teeth. Root canal therapy eliminates bacteria from the infected root canal, preventing reinfection of the tooth, and saving natural teeth. Root canals have come a long way in the past decade, allowing treatment to be much quicker with minimal discomfort. During root canal treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is meticulously cleaned and disinfected, then filled and sealed. This effective and safe treatment is done to help save a tooth, which is preferable to removing the tooth completely, which could then lead to other restorative dental issues and treatments.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

When a tooth develops severe tooth decay or an infection, whether due to poor oral health or injury, treatment is required to prevent worsening discomfort and tooth loss. To begin, we take steps to ensure your comfort with local anesthesia and possibly dental sedation. Next, we will open the tooth to access the pulp, the nerve center of your tooth that is surrounded by dentin and the outer layer of tooth enamel.

We gently remove the pulp from the interior of the tooth. Don’t worry, your tooth will be able to remain strong without the pulp as surrounding tissues will help nourish it. The interior is then cleaned and disinfected to destroy harmful bacteria and prevent reinfection. We next fill the interior with a unique restorative material. Finally, the tooth is sealed with a dental crown. The procedure takes one to two visits to complete, depending on the severity of your infection, and patients often find the experience similar to receiving a simple dental filling.

The Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

As we touched on above, lack of treatment for an infected tooth could mean worsening pain. In the advanced stage, the tooth could require extraction to prevent the spread of infection to other parts of the smile, or could fall out. When we administer treatment, we not only bring instant relief to your smile, but we also improve your ability to chew, protect surrounding teeth from further strain or damage, and help preserve the overall stability of your smile.
